The 1990s were a dream time. The music was great, fashion was timeless, and the movies were iconic.
The '90s definitely left their mark on the music industry. So many new genres and artists came to be during this decade. Genre-wise, society was given Alternative, SkaPunk, Fusion, and RapRock, to name a few. Artists were blending styles like never before, aided by the affordability and accessibility of digital recording equipment—they could now record tracks from the comfort of their own homes! Some notable artists that were popular during this decade include Radiohead, Madonna, Spice Girls, Nirvana, Elton John, Snoop Dog, Whitney Houston, Guns N' Roses, Aerosmith, Bon Jovi, Mazzy Star, Fiona Apple; and, let's not forget Britney Spears and the Backstreet Boys – who represent the awkward turn of the decade.
Besides music, movies were also amazing. Some of fan favourites that came out during the decade include 10 Things I Hate About You, Clueless, Pretty Women, Passport To Paris, It Takes Two, Notting Hill, The Truman Show, The Parent Trap, Happy Gilmore, The Titanic, Girl Interrupted, She’s All That, The Virgin Suicides, and many others. Something enjoyable about movies that came out in this decade is that some of them are modern retellings of classic novels. Like how Clueless is the Beverly Hills version of Jane Austen’s Emma, and how 10 Things I Hate About You is a retelling of Willaim Shakespeare’s “Taming of the Shrew”. It’s a very interesting genre of film that is still done today, but nothing that is going to beat what was done in the '90s.
Now that we’ve evaluated what people were listening to and what they were watching it's time to figure out what on earth they were wearing. Grunge fashion dominated the decade. Yes, there was some colour, but after grunge took over, it wasn’t as popular. This style was composed of flannel shirts, band shirts, messy hair, abused jeans… you get the idea.
The decade left its mark; the '90s shaped many things in pop culture history.
