After a long absence, an actual badminton team will finally be back at Galt. 3 years ago, the team had just been finalized when Covid hit, which marked the official end of the badminton season. Last year, there was a badminton “team” during lunch hours but it was mainly secondary 5s, with a few secondary 4s and even fewer sec 3s. Not to mention, only 2 teams of girls. Many people still think that that’s what the badminton team is like, but there is much more to it than that. This year we are hoping to have a team resembling what it was in the past; one where there were boys and girls from every level, where after-school practices were a bonding experience with the other players and were a chance to improve, with the help of good coaches. As the season went by, we could witness our progress and all the hours of work led to the tournaments, when the gym was filled with frenzy and excitement for the big day. I cherish the memories of days spent at Galt when I was younger watching my brother and his friends compete in Galt’s annual badminton tournament. The gym was packed and at the end of the day, everyone would gather around the court for the last game of the day; the senior boys singles.

I encourage everyone to give badminton a try, especially younger levels who have never gotten to experience the sport in all its glory. This is a chance to move your body, perhaps discover a new sport you’ll love, and make new friends. Practices start Monday, March 20th and will take place three times a week (Monday, Wednesday, Thursday) from 3:50 to 5:50 until early May. Late buses are available. You’ve got nothing to lose. Hope to see you there!
