There are plenty of paths forward if you intend on pursuing a higher education. What you might not have known is that there are plenty of very viable options online! There are online courses offered by Harvard University which encompasses almost anyone’s preferred trade, so by reading further, you will learn all you need to know.
If you go to Harvard’s online course list, you will see a ton of choices. They can be encompassed into 9 general categories:
Art & Design
Humanities
Business
Mathematics
Computer Science
Programming
Data Science
Science
Education and Teaching
Social Sciences
Health & Science
There are a variety of options, and in every category, the courses are predominantly free. Let’s say you wanted to take a Computer Science course? You don’t need any previous knowledge to start. Simply choose a course labeled “Beginner”. Before starting, I would look online. There is usually a large following behind each of the courses. Take one of their most popular courses as an example.
Known as CS50x, it was a finalist in the EDX prize of 2018. It has also been rated one of the top 100 courses of all time, and all of this online! It is an introductory level course, so it's perfect for anyone who wants to begin their computer science journey. It is 11 weeks long, and it requires 8-16 hours of dedicated time every week. You then get a certificate, and you get to write you completed a Harvard course on your resume.
Let's say Computer Science isn’t really your jam; that’s perfectly understandable. There are about 500 other online courses scattered across the other 10 categories. Obviously, some of the categories are weighed more importantly (think something like Business, one of Harvard’s specialties). There is truly something for everyone interested in finding a course for them.
Even if none of the categories appeal to you, there are general benefit courses that apply to almost every type of trade; things like the 30 minute Business course on negotiating salary. If you plan on getting paid, then I’m sure we can all agree that getting paid more is just simply an advantage.
There are a huge number of reasons for doing these courses. I don’t know about you, but to me, it seems like a great way to get an Ivy League education, without even needing to get accepted into the school.
