Christmas Traditions Explained

Chloe Boulianne

When you think of Christmas, what comes to mind? Is it the decorated evergreen tree, Santa Claus, or even Christmas caroling? The origins of several holiday traditions will be explained in this article.

One of the most common traditions in the western world is that of the Christmas tree. This custom began in Germany, during the 16th century. Citizens brought evergreen trees into their homes, and decorated them with apples, pastries, and candles in order to lighten the darkness of the days around the Winter Solstice. As cultural traditions, celebrations, and religion evolved, the trees became a part of the yuletide celebrations. This custom was popularised by Queen Victoria and Prince Albert, as they were photographed standing in front of a decorated tree. Their influence was widespread, making Christmas trees a newfound tradition.

One of the most recognizable faces of Christmas is Santa Claus, otherwise known as Kris Kringle or Saint Nicholas. It all started in Turkey with a real man named Saint Nicolas. Said to have been born around 280 C.E. in Patara. Saint Nicolas was known for his kindness and generosity towards others. A common tale told about St. Nicholas is how he saved three poor sisters from becoming slaves or prostitutes. This is said to have been done by giving them each a dowry so that they could afford to get married. Saint Nicolas merged with various folklore gift givers, most notably the English father Christmas to create the modern Santa Claus. The image of Santa Claus as we know today was used by the Coca-Cola company for advertising.

Finally, Christmas caroling. This tradition started in the 14th century, when people would go around spreading hope and happiness to others. The first-ever carols were created by Franciscan friars, who were followers of Saint Francis of Assisi. These carols were performed by the friars, who danced in a circle and sang the songs together. Through the years, as these carols were lost, new ones were created. One of the oldest known carols that is still sung today is "O Come All Ye Faithful," which dates back to the 18th century.

There are countless Christmas traditions around the world that have touched the hearts of millions of families. So, next time you are choosing or decorating your Christmas tree, or going to visit Santa Claus at the mall, think of the history that surrounds these beautiful traditions.
