We all know the struggle of trying to be original, finding new and innovative ideas for pumpkin carving. So, these are my personal top 5 ideas to help make your design stand out.
5: The Jailed Pumpkin
This is one of my all time favorite ideas, I’ve even done it on a number of occasions. To carve it, get two pumpkins (one big, one small) and hollow them both out. Take the bigger pumpkin and make a hole in the top at least the size of the smaller pumpkin. Then, take the bigger pumpkin and cut large vertical chunks from it. You can make as many as you want to, but I personally would limit it to the front of the pumpkin. The hands on the bars are fully optional, but it’s a nice touch for that extra pizazz. For the smaller pumpkin, you can carve out whatever facial expression you desire. Personally, I would go for a scared face to fit with the whole theme. Finally, insert the smaller pumpkin into the bigger one, and you have your design!
4: Sorry John
This one is a classic. It’s also relatively easy to pull off. All you need is a hollowed out pumpkin, some pants and a single shoe. To start off, take a medium sized pumpkin, and hollow it out. Then, carve out a large mouth, and two eyes. I would heavily encourage anyone doing this to make this step as scary as possible – from adding some red kool-aid to mimic blood, to making the mouth creepily big. Anything goes! For the next and most important part, take a pair of pants, and stuff them with whatever you can find. Got cotton balls, or maybe a bunch of apples? Whatever makes it look like a leg is in there. Finally, take a pair of shoes and attach them to the base of the pant leg. This can be done by just propping it up, or even taping the back and front of the shoe to the front and back of the pants. And there you have it!
3: Skeleton Pumpkin
This is one of the most unique ideas on the list: The half-pumpkin, half-skeleton. For this pumpkin, you will need some white paint, a large pumpkin, and a slightly smaller pumpkin*. To start, hollow out both pumpkins, but for the bigger pumpkin, hollow it out from the front, in the shape of a “separated face” (as pictured above). Once both are hollow, carve the bigger pumpkin's features, and try to make sure they line up horizontally with their counterpart. Next up, we have the skeleton pumpkin. Before carving its facial features, paint it fully white. Once the paint is dry, carve out its eyes, nose, and holes around the teeth. Finally, take the bigger pumpkin and hollow out a smaller pumpkin size hole in the back. Then, put the smaller pumpkin inside the bigger one. Be sure that the face of the skeleton is visible through the front of the bigger pumpkin.
*Try to get a pumpkin whose width is less than its length for easier insertion into the bigger pumpkin. If it isn’t, that’s not an issue; it just makes it harder.
2: The 20 second Pumpkin
This one is the least creative of all the options on this list. It’s lazy, and it’s fast to make. However, it's a super cute idea for a pumpkin, so that's why it’s ranked so high on the list. For this one, simply hollow the pumpkin, and stab it with some toothpicks a couple of times to make the eyes, and take a smaller knife to cut out the mouth. And there you have it: a simple yet cute pumpkin for all your Halloween needs.
1: The Pumpkin Invasion
This last Idea is so original that it hasn't even been done yet (or I just can’t find it online). The way to do this one is to find your favorite way of carving pumpkins, it can be whatever you want: maybe it involves a simple face or even a really scary one. You will need to make quite a few of them, so try to find a design you can do relatively fast and simply. Next, hollow as many pumpkins as you can find, and do relatively similar designs on all of them. Lay them out, and people are sure to be intimidated by the huge amount of pumpkins staring them down.
